Tiger Tacook IH Rice Cooker & Giveaway!

PictureRice Cooker Giveaway (details at bottom of blog post)
A side of rice is a staple in my home whenever I cook Asian food, so this small kitchen appliance is like my best friend.

It's been over 10 years since I've upgraded my rice cooker, so I was really excited when Tiger Corporation reached out to see if I would test their latest Induction Heating Tacook Rice Cooker.  I opted to try out their 5.5 cup model (JKT-S10U) instead of the larger 10-cup model.

My first question though, was what exactly is Induction Heating (IH) and Tacook?

Induction Heating rice cookers cook the rice with an even distribution of heat which means more consistency in the rice. Yay! ♥ I remember when I got my first inexpensive rice cooker in college and there would always be clumps of mushy rice on the bottom yet some patches that were still a bit dry. Anyone else have this problem? The IH rice cooker takes care of this, and because it heats up faster than the non-IH cookers, Tiger was also able to add a bread cooking function too!  More on this in a bit.
Picture
Oyakodon (Traditional Japanese dish w/ Chicken & Egg) cooked using the Tacook Feature

Tacook is another innovative feature that I ended up loving, which is the ability to simultaneously cook a dish and rice at the same time.  I tested this feature making Oyakodon with one of the recipes from Tiger's Tacook cookbook.  Basically, I washed and prepped my rice as I normally would, then filled the top orange basket with chicken, onions and a seasoned egg mixture.

Pictureremovable Orange Insert basket (left)
Chopping and prepping the ingredients for the top basket took me about 10 minutes, but after that, I placed the orange basket on top of the rice, then pressed "Synchro-Cooking". About 50 minutes later, I could smell the Oyakodon in my kitchen and it was done!  An all-in-one rice cooker meal for those days I just don't feel like cooking a traditional stove top meal.

The basket and Tacook recipes typically serve about 2 people, but if you're able to cook a separate veggie stir-fry or accompany them with other side dishes, I could see this being enough for 2-3 servings.

Synchro-Cooking feature cooks 2 dishes at once
ULTRA is Amazing!  Another feature I loved is the Ultra Rice Setting.  The Ultra function takes longer to cook (total of 1 hour 10 mins. for 2 cups of white rice) but it made my not so expensive rice taste like a higher quality short grain one (which I happened to run out of at the time I tested this feature).  Seriously, I can't believe how much better it made the inexpensive rice taste!  That particular day I made my Mapo Tofu dish and I was so surprised at how good the rice was, I found myself trying to scooping out plain rice just to taste it more.
Picture
My Spicy Mapo Tofu Recipe with Rice cooked on the ULTRA setting
There's so many other features on this rice cooker that I have yet to try: The Slowcooker setting, Bread, and Porridge (for congee), I can't wait to test them out based on my experiences with the Tacook and Ultra features!

I am so excited to try the ULTRA rice feature! I live in Arizona and sometimes I find it difficult to get good quality jasmine rice (my childhood rice of choice). The ULTRA feature sounds like it would make jasmine rice from my local supermarket taste like what I remember from my childhood!

The 'ultra' setting sounds really neat, but I'm really interested in the idea of baking bread in a rice cooker. My current oven is a 80s era oven with a manual dial, and it just can't seem to keep a consistent temperature to bake a really good loaf of bread. Baking fresh bread in a rice cooker would be really revolutionary!

Even though the bread setting is something I would like to try, the Ultra setting is something I would like to try with the cheap rice I am still trying to get through. See, I bought 20 lbs of rice for a little over $7 and it was the worst rice I've ever bought. I've mixed it with Jasmine so I wouldn't waste so much of it.

Therefore, I hope this rice cooker can save me some time and I would also try love to try out the brown rice and bread feature!

I read many delicious recipes with baking with rice cooker but my old one can't make it so I am really excited if this Tiger rice cooker could make it. I also love sticky rice, which I normally have to cook with a steamer but I heard that a good rice cooker can make sticky rice also. If I won this prize I would love to try out the many features but the tacook is the deal breaker for me. Having the chance if cooking two dishes at the same time without having to use oil seems unbelievable! My parents both suffer from diabetes and if they were to own an amazing product like the Tiger Tacook Rice Cooker would give them a chance to cook meals faster without the use of oil or grease.

I would love to try the Tacook feature of this rice cooker. Grew up eating rice everyday, at least twice a day. I owned a tiger rice cooker and I have no complaints. They last at least ten or more years. The rice cooker I have right now is older than my son who is now almost 17, and still cooks my rice perfect. But this new features that they have would make it a lot easier to make a meal.

Hi Angel! If I had the opportunity, I would definitely use the tacook feature on the cooker. I have always loved cooking, especially meals that I can work rice into, and I really appreciate the simultaneous cooking along with the rice to make lunches and dinners easier. I recently came back from a 2 and a half month trip in Italy, and it truly turned my love of cooking from hobby to passion. Since then I've been cooking my heart out, and learning a lot from your videos on Taiwanese cuisine. This cooker would be an amazing help in the kitchen, and for the friends and family I feed.

Thanks for hosting this great giveaway, and I look forward to more videos!
