How to Regrow your Green Onions // Fun Kitchen Experiment!

PictureMy Video: How to Regrow Green Onions
I've been wanting regrow my green onions/scallions for a while now.  The first time I tried to do this, my Grandparents were over and my Grandmother thought she would be helpful and clean up the kitchen.  She ended up throwing away my poor stem that I had been taking care of for a few days.  (sigh)

Now I'm off to try this again.  I started by saving the bottom stalks of the scallions (the white portions) then putting them in a glass, root down with a few tablespoons of water.  Within 2 days I could see new growth in the green stems. (yay!) By day 5 it looked like they were growing strong.  Now by day 6, I could literally see the changes overnight.

Dragon Boat Festival is coming up in mid-June and this year it's June 20th, 2015.  It's an annual tradition that began more than 2,300 years ago that's been passed down from generation to generation.  It's probably most famously known for it's Zòngzi (粽子) which is Bamboo leaf wrapped sticky rice, and Dragon Boat Racing.

2 Cooking Styles of Sticky Rice Dumplings . . . Every year, my grandmother would make us Zòngzi to eat and this year I finally asked her to teach me.  I found out there are 2 types of the sticky rice dumpling cooking styles:  Steamed & Boiled.
They are both pretty much the same, with the exception of the type of rice used.  The version that I made in my video recipe tutorial was the boiled type.

The History of the Poet. . .  When I asked my grandfather how Dragon Boat Festival came about, he told me it's a story that began 2,356 years ago (not sure how he got so exact on dates given it's a legend, but I appreciated the details).  There was a poet who was also a chancellor of a country and unfortunately, during that era there were lots of wars.
