Growing up my Grandma made the best Turnip Cakes. She would cook them around Chinese New Year as a tradition for good luck food.  But you can oftentimes order this dish at Dim Sum restaurants too.  A small secret:  after Granny taught me how to make this, I don't bother ordering this during Dim Sum outings.  There's no reason to since her's are the best!

In this recipe video tutorial I'll show you her recipe on how to make these Turnip Cakes from scratch.  If you're considering making this at home, do make sure to watch the video for full instructions and tips.

Tip:  Steam the turnip mixture a day or two before you want to serve it.  This will allow enough time for the turnips to fully cool and firm up before using.  That way you're not impatiently waiting around for it to cool.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. bag of rice flour  (Erawan Brand)
  • 2 lb. Asian turnips -or- daikon radish
  • 4 cups of water
  • 3 Tbsp. dried shrimp
  • 3 links of Chinese Sausage
  • 1 Tbsp. dried shallots
  • 1 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. white pepper

I'm using an 8x8 glass container for steaming the Turnip Cakes.
