Thanksgiving Time!  Asian Style Turkey?

11/20/2015

Picture5 Spice Roasted Soy Chicken Recipe
For the past two years, I've made the traditional American style dinner for Thanksgiving.  Stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and of course, the turkey.

I've always brined mine, and it's turned out really well...unlike the dry turkey you usually get when you're eating out or when you go to those family reunion dinners (you know what I mean).

This year, I'll be traveling to see relatives and likely won't be able to cook on Thanksgiving day, BUT that doesn't mean I won't be celebrating as soon as I get back.  I'll plan on making my 5 Spice Roasted Soy Chicken recipe and depending on how adventurous I feel and how many mouths to feed, I may use a Turkey instead of a chicken.  The soy sauce brine that I used in that recipe could be doubled (depending on the size of the bird), then let to sit for 8-10 hours overnight.

Grocery Shopping at Safeway
This month, the Albertsons Safeway family of stores is hosting a national "Hunger Is" campaign.

The program helps to raise awareness and funds that will help hungry children and their families through local food banks.

This month, I'm supporting the Hunger Is campaign by shopping at my local Safeway and making a purchase of a participating product.

Last month, I was invited to join Vessel and share my new videos with Vessel subscribers and users first during 'Early Access'. For those of you who aren't already familiar with them, Vessel launched in early 2015 as a Premium short form video provider.

Similar to YouTube where you can watch videos for free, Vessel also has an Early Access subscription service. This is where you can get early video viewing access (24 hours - 1 week earlier) to your favorite YouTubers (think Ingrid Nilsen - yes, I'm a fan!) and other online shows for only $2.99/month.

What does this mean?

How to Regrow your Green Onions // Fun Kitchen Experiment!

PictureMy Video: How to Regrow Green Onions
I've been wanting regrow my green onions/scallions for a while now.  The first time I tried to do this, my Grandparents were over and my Grandmother thought she would be helpful and clean up the kitchen.  She ended up throwing away my poor stem that I had been taking care of for a few days.  (sigh)

Now I'm off to try this again.  I started by saving the bottom stalks of the scallions (the white portions) then putting them in a glass, root down with a few tablespoons of water.  Within 2 days I could see new growth in the green stems. (yay!) By day 5 it looked like they were growing strong.  Now by day 6, I could literally see the changes overnight.

Dragon Boat Festival (Daunwu) & Bamboo Sticky Rice Traditions

Dragon Boat Festival is coming up in mid-June and this year it's June 20th, 2015.  It's an annual tradition that began more than 2,300 years ago that's been passed down from generation to generation.  It's probably most famously known for it's Zòngzi (粽子) which is Bamboo leaf wrapped sticky rice, and Dragon Boat Racing.

2 Cooking Styles of Sticky Rice Dumplings . . . Every year, my grandmother would make us Zòngzi to eat and this year I finally asked her to teach me.  I found out there are 2 types of the sticky rice dumpling cooking styles:  Steamed & Boiled.
They are both pretty much the same, with the exception of the type of rice used.  The version that I made in my video recipe tutorial was the boiled type.

The History of the Poet. . .  When I asked my grandfather how Dragon Boat Festival came about, he told me it's a story that began 2,356 years ago (not sure how he got so exact on dates given it's a legend, but I appreciated the details).  There was a poet who was also a chancellor of a country and unfortunately, during that era there were lots of wars.

Trying Nomiku Sous Vide - Unboxing & Product Review

Watch my Nomiku Unboxing Video
Ever since I was young and watched Food Network, I loved seeing elite chefs using sous vide cooking appliances to make meat and fish perfectly tender.  Nomiku, a San Francisco based company let me try out their Sous Vide Classic Nomiku.  It's an immersion circulator that controls water temperature and circulates water in your own pots. Such a clever idea to allow using sous-vide in your own stock pots instead of having to have a traditional sous vide appliance that could take up huge amounts of kitchen counter space.
